Against her doctor's orders Queen Seraphine Whitehall Betany Bluedawn stood before her window, framed in the light of the dying sun. Out past the castle grounds she stared, beyond the city streets and the portside docks, and the ocean stretching further than them all; a dark, shimmering ribbon on the horizon. She wore a grim expression on her face that even the hues of gold and pink that shone against the landscape could do little to remedy. The ache of organs shredded by alien affliction, now long familiar, would not let it. The sun dipped below the horizon, taking with it any lingering color and light. The castle thrummed with a nervous energy. The time had come, Queen Seraphine of Orius thought to herself. She had waited long enough, and any longer would be too late. Whatever the king had planned it would rear its ugly head soon. She had to be ready. Behind her the door to Seraphine's chambers clicked, and a servant woman backed her way into the room.
